Tennis Intensives - Skill Prerequisites
For Juniors (11 years-old and up*) and Adults (Level 2 only)

Tennis Intensive Level 1 – Stroke Development Program
The TI Level 1 Program is for players who are working on their stroke development and basic fundamentals. All the
basic strokes will be thoroughly reviewed and practiced. Emphasis on proper technique including strokes and
footwork as it pertains to ground-strokes, volleys, serves and related shots. 80-90% of the time will be spent
reviewing and practicing stroke technique. 10-20% of the time will be allocated to playing points and learning how to
play games and sets for both singles and doubles.

  • Skill Qualification for TI-1 Program:
    - You have taken group lessons for at least 12 months, and/or private lessons for 6 months.
    - You can execute basic forehand and backhand ground-strokes, volleys and serves with fair to good form    
    and timing, but more development and technical refinements are needed.
    - You can sustain a rally consisting of 3 forehands and 3 backhand ground-strokes with a coach.
    - You can execute 3 forehand and 3 backhand volleys in succession without an error (with a coach).
    - You can hit 50% of your serves in the service box at any speed, but with a complete service motion.

Tennis Intensive Level 2 – Stroke Refinement, Specialty Shots and Strategy
The TI Level 2 Program is for players who have well developed strokes and good fundamentals on basic shots. In
addition to reviewing the basic shots, the TI-2 course will adapt your good strokes to specialty shots such as
approach shots, half-volleys, overheads, serve returns, etc. 60-70% of the time will be spent reviewing and
developing new shots and technique. 30-40% of the time will be allocated to playing points, games and sets.
Various strategies will be presented for both doubles and singles.

  • Skill Qualification for TI-2 Program:
    - You have taken group lessons for at least 2 years, and/or private lessons for 1 year, or the equivalent.
    - You can execute basic forehand and backhand ground-strokes, volleys and serves with good form and
      timing, accuracy and consistency.
    - You can sustain a rally consisting of 5 forehands and 5 backhand ground-strokes with a coach.
    - You can execute 5 forehand and 5 backhand volleys in succession without an error (with a coach).
    - You are serving with a complete motion and can place 80% of your serves in the service box with moderate
     slice or topspin.  
    - You can successfully hit 5 consecutive overheads out of the air, from the service line.

Participants in the TI-2 Program are encouraged to play in at least one
OCCTA Pre-Satellite round-robin
tournament during the 6 week session. John will provide a schedule of local tournaments.

Tennis Intensive Level 3 – Tournament Training Program:
The TI Level 3 Program is specifically designed for players who have very well developed strokes and excellent
fundamentals on all basic shots. Emphasis will be on intense drills, training and tactics all designed to prepare
participants for competing in tournaments. In addition to reviewing the basic shots, the TI-3 course will refine your
specialty shots such as approach shots, half-volleys, overheads, serve returns, advanced use of spin, etc. 50-60%
of the time will be spent on drills and specialty shots refinement. 40-50% of the time will be allocated to playing
points, games and sets. Advanced strategy will be presented for both doubles and singles.

  • Skill Qualification for TI-3 Program:
·         - You have taken group lessons for at least 3 years, and/or private lessons for 2 years, or the equivalent.
·         - You can execute basic forehand and backhand ground-strokes, volleys and serves with excellent form
and timing, accuracy and consistency.
·         - You can sustain a competitive rally consisting of 10 forehands and 10 backhand ground-strokes with a
coach.
·         - You can execute 10 forehand and 10 backhand volleys in succession without an error (with a coach).
·         - You are serving with a complete motion and can place 100% of your serves in the service box with
moderate slice or topspin using an advanced (Continental) grip.
·         - You can successfully hit 10 consecutive overheads out of the air, from the service line.
·         - You can execute approach shots, half-volleys, and use under-spin with all accuracy and consistency.

Participants in the TI-3 Program
are required to play in at least one OCCTA Pre-Satellite round-robin tournament,
or USTA Satellite or Open tournament, during the 6 week session. John will provide a schedule of tournaments.
